Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, July 31st. Please note, payment is not due at this time, and will be collected once you are accepted. Accepted exhibitors will receive e-mail confirmation by August 15th.

This Saturday, May 4th is National Free Comic Day, and the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery will issue an exclusive 16-page Freak Comic Book mini featuring a stellar cast of local alternative artists, including Short Run co-founders Kelly Froh and Eroyn Franklin.

Edited by Intruder contributor Marc Palm, the book also includes new works by Max Clotfelter, Tom Van Deusen, Ben Horak, Darin Shuler, David Lasky, Aidan Fitzgerald, Pat Moriarity, John Ohannesian, Max Badger, and James Stanton. As May 4th is also Star Wars Day (“May the Fourth Be With You”), the mini concludes with touching tributes to Yoda by Peter Bagge, Ellen Forney, Jim Woodring, and Kazimir Stzrepek.

Freak Comic Book is limited to 100 copies. Get yours while you can at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle’s historic Georgetown arts community.

Seattle’s free weekly The Stranger is featuring founding member Eroyn Franklin‘s artwork from Short Run 2012 on the cover this week! You can pick up a screenprint version of this in Short Run’s Etsy shop. And inside is a wonderful feature on Eroyn’s comics:

And nobody in Seattle is doing more to experiment with comics than Eroyn Franklin… Franklin is a comics mad scientist who seems to always have two or three different experiments running at a time.

We’re proud to announce the 3rd annual Short Run festival will be held on Saturday, November 30th at the historical Washington Hall in the Central District neighborhood of Seattle. Applications will open in the Spring, and will be announced at shortrun.org, as well as on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Short Run was founded in 2011 to celebrate Seattle’s lauded small press community, and we’re excited to bring you the grandest festival yet. Short Run 2013 will feature 120 artists of comics, art books, zines and literary works focusing on regional artists, limited editions, and handmade books. This year, the festival is held on “Small Business Saturday,” a nationwide campaign to support buying local goods.

The spectacular stage at Washington Hall will be screening animation throughout the day. The wrap-around balcony will be home to an epic mural outlined by exhibiting artists, and colored in and added to by attendees. Other rooms will host drawing games, live silk screening, workshops, shadow puppet shows, readings, and rock operas. Our decadent bake sale will be accompanied by visiting food trucks, to provide a quick bite for visitors.

After the festival closes, Washington Hall will be transformed into a “Comics Prom,” a 21 + dance party.

Short Run will be announcing our exhibitors, programming schedule, and more exciting details later this year.

Short Run is honored to present Ishi’s Brain: a Shadow Puppet Show excerpted from the book Songs Of The Abyss By Eamon Espey, on Thursday, April 25th at the Richard Hugo House in Seattle, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Baltimore cartoonist Eamon Espey’s new graphic novel, Songs of the Abyss, has just been published by Secret Acres (New York). The book tour is accompanied by a puppet show adaptation of the chapter entitled Ishi’s Brain.

Eamon’s previous book, Wormdye was published in 2008, also by Secret Acres. His work has appeared in art shows in Los Angeles, Istanbul, New York and in print in Sweden’s Galago Magazine and the Washington DC publication Bash Magazine. Songs of the Abyss further examines and diagrams all things spiritual and grotesque. Ancient Egyptian gods birth Biblical giants. Santa Claus is an agent of the Devil. A scientist performs sadistic experiments in search of enlightenment. All is rendered in black ink with scalpel-like precision.

Eamon has collaborated with Lisa Krause to make a puppet show adaptation of his comic, Ishi’s Brain, based on the true story of a man that has often been referred to as “the last wild Indian.” The show includes shadow puppets, masks, a marionette and a liberal use of painted cardboard. An original soundtrack has been written by Stephen Santillian of Baltimore bands Thank You and Ghost Life.

Lisa Krause is a trained sculptor and has been an Associate Artist with Black Cherry Puppet Theater since 2009. She has studied traditional marionette carving in the Czech Republic and recently just spent a month living and performing with the anarchist theater group, Bread and Puppet.

Special guests include Tess Martin, who will show several of her beautiful animated shorts; Tim Miller, who will present the return of “Jelly & Toast” a musical, comic conversation; and Erin Tanner, who will perform his own mysterious/genius shadow play. This is an incredible amount of entertainment for $5!

This is Short Run’s first smaller event outside of the annual small press festival which takes place in the Fall.

This coming Friday, February 8th, Short Run founder Kelly Froh takes part in the latest Hugo Literary Series: “Strong Female Leads.”

She’ll be joined by National Book Award finalist Patricia Smith, poet Arlene Kim, and musical guest Katie Kate. Together, they’ll answer the questions, What is it about Strong Female Leads that scare some of us — and why must they often carry a weapon to do so? Can you create female-driven narratives that will pass the Bechdel Test without killing someone in the process?

And then on Saturday, February 9th, Kelly leads the class “Writing the Stories of Your Life in Little, Folded, Stapled Books!”

Auto-bio mini-comics! They can be any amount of pages and they can house some great but quick precious moments, horrifying embarrassments, or anything else worthy of sharing. In this class we will discover which stories from our lives have surprising but relatable moments that will engage another reader, how to condense that story into only the most important touch points, and talk about what illustrations can do to enhance the story. We’ll do some wild writing, some sketching, and a lot of sharing of stories to help each other come out of class with an idea for your next (or first?) mini-comic.
